Cristina DiChiera, Director of Artist Programs at the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA), will present
information on how to apply for grants from the state and other sources to fund art project, workshops, collaborations and events. She will provide an overview of RISCA’s new Design Innovation Grant and Professional Development Grant as well as RISCA’s online resources for artists, teachers and arts organizations.
Visit the Nomadic Fab Lab at Slater Mill during the RI Maker Faire. We’ll be bringing all the tools of the Fab Lab to the Community Guild Studios at Slater Mill for an evening of fab workshops. Come play the game Fluxly and build your own game controller using the tools of the Providence Fab Lab.

Glass Torchwork is Accessible!
Using a small and portable torch, Jenine Bressner demonstrates how easy glass torchwork can be! The process is analogous to drawing mid-air with molten glass, and starting a studio does not have to be a huge investment.
Make Your Own Wooden Thumb Drive Housing
This workshop provides participants with an introduction to woodworking. Students will learn about different wood species, understand grain direction, and moisture distribution in lumber. Participants will learn how to safely work with a variety of hand tools to shape their very own thumb drive housing. Wood and tools will be provided – participants should provide their own thumb drive and even pop it open to remove the covers if possible – thumb drives will also be available on site for purchase. Feel free to bring along other circuit boards as Keeseh is willing to give advice and guide you through creating housing for those on your own at home.
An Introduction to Augmented Reality and ARToolKitedit
Presented by Intel Computer Clubhouse Network Alumni Duke Atkinson and Sean Galloway with Technology Manager Keith Simmons. The Intel Computer Clubhouse Network is a program of the Museum of Science, Boston, with support from the MIT Media Lab.

Let your imagination run wild with new and innovative ideas that you could make with the assistance of a CNC router as we share how you can gain access to this machine. On September 17th from 4-6 pm, Keeseh’s doors will be open for CNC routing demonstrations and woodshop tours. Demonstrations on the 5’x8’x6” Shopbot CNC router will be held every half hour – showing the machines capabilities, limitations, explaining how it all works, and displaying some designs that the studio has produced with the machine. Visit Keeseh’s workshop at the Hope Artiste Village before heading over to Green Drinks, also at Hope Artiste Village.
Green Drinks is a monthly gathering that provides a great opportunity to meet people who are personally and/or professionally interested and involved in a variety of environmental, conservation, and sustainability issues. It’s an informal and fun time! Join us for September’s Green Drinks at Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket! This month’s event is hosted by New Harvest Coffee and Hope Artiste Village in the beautifully restored Hope Webbing Building.
Learn the basics of circuit bending in this workshop with Jimmie P. Rodgers, which is the modification of toys or instruments to generate crazy sounds. All parts and tools included in the costs. We will be exploring and modifying a Staples Easy Button, with an emphasis on the common processes you would use for any toy. You will then explore and circuit bend the easy button yourself. Lots of parts will be available, so you will walk out with a one of a kind instrument that you’ve made yourself. This workshop is great for kids, kids at heart, or anyone who wants to learn how to circuit bend. There will be soldering and the use of a Dremel.
Making Cool Things With Microcontrollers
Anyone can learn how to make cool things with microcontrollers! Even if you’ve never sewn a button, you can actually make a fun, intriguing project at the Faire at this workshop led by Mitch Altman. Blink lights, hack your brain, play video games, turn off TVs in public places — microcontrollers can do it all. This is for all skill and experience levels. Ages 5 to 100. You can even learn to solder!
The Atari Punk Console is a simple synthesizer with a wide range of sounds. It is so named because the sounds generated are similar to those of the early Atari consoles. In this workshop, Jimmie P. Rodgers teaches you the basics of the timing circuits used to make these crazy sounds. You will also learn how to solder, and how to change the the sounds with your fingers as the contact, or even using light to make a simple light Theremin. All parts and tools included in the costs. You are encouraged to find a fun case for your APC and bring it (cigar box, mint tin, Mr. Potato Head other plastic toy, etc), anything hollow that can hold a deck of cards would do, but some will be available at the workshop. This workshop is great for kids, kids at heart, or anyone who wants to learn about sound generation. There will be soldering and the use of a Dremel.

Maker Meet-Up Wii Remote Hacking Workshop
WiiMote hacking workshop presented by Tellart. Gain access to the special powers of the Wii Remote. Learn about the magical internals of the Wii Remote, and how to use these powers to do your bidding (and maybe control a thing or two). We will use freely-available computer software, as well as other tools, to explore these useful wireless sensing wonders.

Maker Faire RI will be joining the Steel Yard for this fundraiser. Teams of artists and fabricators compete in our 2nd annual head-to-head sculpture competition at the Steel Yard. Enjoy grilled goodies and stick around for the Iron Chef sculpture auction.
